Antibiotics? Naw! Try Oil of Oregano instead!

Oil of Oregano is a MUST HAVE for every single family. It is documented in several medical studies as having the ability to rival the strength of vancomyacin, which one of the strongest antibiotics available. Hospitals regularly give vancomyacin intravenously when oral antibiotics fail. (pubmed.org)  As an added bonus, unlike traditionally used medical antibiotics, Oil of Oregano doesn’t run the risk of bacteria learning how to defend itself against it. (No, resistance issues present themselves in case studies, which is why Big Pharma is so interested in breaking it down to patent it.) Oil of Oregano will be here, fully functional, even when in a few more years as they predict, antibiotics will no longer be effective.

When penicillin was first created, it was known even then that antibiotics, no matter how they were altered had a life span of only several decades. In order to make it last as long as possible doctors were urged to not over prescribe or allow patients to use them improperly (such as when people stop using them before the bacteria is wiped out.) And so, in reading the warnings in medical journals, it has become clear to me from countless studies that our human marriage with antibiotics will be coming to a close shortly. With the rise of MRSA, we can see this already happening. This is why, the absolute RULE for my family is that unless it is a life or death matter, we will refuse antibiotics.

Enter: Medicinal oils such as oregano, thyme and clove. Each of these oils have tremendous bacteria killing capabilities. They kill bacteria in an entirely different way. So, even if the body still has remaining bacteria in it, that bacteria has not been able to “learn” how to mutate to overcome these oils. Each of these oils can be taken internally in a caplet. I use clove on my skin, because it smells nice. I use oil of oregano internally because it has been studied very extensively and seems to be the strongest and most effective of these powerful herbal oils.

  • All of these oils need to be diluted, because they can cause irritation if they are not diluted. I generally dilute them in a ratio of 1:4 (medicinal oil: carrier oil.) Planetary Herbals is the Oil of Oregano I prefer to use in a caplet that has the right percentage of the active ingredient carvacrol.
  • Do not use Oil of Oregano if you are pregnant simply because it has not been studied extensively with pregnancy. Oil of Oregano is used in hormonally unhealthy women to bring about a healthy period, so one concern is that it could cause bleeding. It’s not a big concern, but while they study it further, it would be best to use another natural remedy, perhaps a homeopathic one.
  • Do not use Oil of Oregano is you are on any medicinal blood thinners because it naturally thins your blood to a healthy level. It is not believed to be counter-indicated with blood thinners, but just in case, do me a favor and avoid it.
  • I’m not a doctor. No one at Everything Birth is a doctor. While I do guarantee that I have done extensive research in respectable medical journals (as opposed to hippie herbal medicine websites) and wholeheartedly believe everything I’ve written, it’s imperative for the purpose of legality that I mention that this should not be considered “professional” medical advice.

These are the only warnings you will need to be aware of. (Verses the pages and pages of warnings in almost every single bag you pick up from the pharmacy.) You can learn more on your own by using the term carvacrol (Oil of Oregano) in a search at http://www.pubmed.org.

Another powerful antibiotic to look into is colloidal silver because this can be harmlessly sprayed in even an infant’s nasal passage, mouth, ear canal, vaginal area or eyes.

For what it’s worth, each of these natural remedies also kills viruses and fungi… so it eliminates the need for “cultures” to find the right medicine. This really helps to take the guess work out of helping my family get healthy and avoids the wait time for culture tests which are absolutely crucial to responsible medicine when dealing with traditional methods of killing bacteria and viruses. It is highly irresponsible for a doctor to prescribe an antibiotic without a culture. I realize they do it all the time, so, don’t forget to thank them for the MRSA in our communities the next time you catch them doing this.

If you’re hesitant to take my word for it since I’m just a blogger, I don’t blame you. Do me a favor though, meet me half-way. Have a bottle of Oil of Oregano on hand at all times. The next time you’re sick, take one caplet of oil of oregano three times a day while you wait for the doctor to responsibly order a culture (about a day or so.) If you still don’t feel better by the time the doctor has your results, feel free to responsibly use your antibiotics (while they’re still effective that is.)

New Classifieds Listings Arena Made Specifically For Us!

New Classifieds Listings Arena Made Specifically For Us!

Everything Birth thinks of, well… everything. Not only have they brought us a free community forum (where we can swap stories and information,) a fabulous consulting program where we can earn money by doing what we already do (spread the word about the benefits of cloth diapering,) an Amazon links page (so we can easily find the best prices on items they don’t carry, but we love,) a medical supply store specializing in midwife and birth supplies, and this regularly updated blog, but now… now they have created:

Birth Depot is a free classifieds listings arena made just for us by the people at Everything Birth. On it, we can easily:

  • Register as a member very simply!
  • Start listing our items within minutes of registration.
  • Manage our ads from a personal “dashboard.”
  • Easily upload photos of our items.

We get to do all of this… FOR FREE.

The pregnancy, birth and early motherhood market is a very specialized market. Birth Depot is a safe, comfortable, easy to maneuver place for us to buy and sell products of interest without having to sift through ads of less consequence to us. We can:

  • Buy or sell midwifery and birthing supplies
  • Buy or sell used cloth diapers
  • Buy or sell baby gear
  • Buy or sell birth, pregnancy or infant related books and DVDs
  • Buy or sell maternity and baby clothes

Sure there’re other places online where you can place classified ads.

On the largest classifieds site, I have been highly disappointed while searching for baby gear, when I stumble across an ad promoting “adult services.”  Ever since they eliminated that category, the ads haven’t gone away; they just show up in other places.  Depending on where I’m at in my monthly cycle, I either get mildly annoyed or I become highly enraged at the infidelity that is clearly attempting to happen while I try to buy a few gently used cloth diapers.

On another classifieds site, you don’t have to worry about this, but you do have to invest a bunch of time building up relationships within the forum before you are even allowed to sell or trade an item. While we understand the reasons behind this, we also know that some of us don’t make a habit out of buying and selling items, so a complicated registration and “getting to know you” period just isn’t convenient.  So we end up just not doing it. Those of us that don’t have this kind of time or interest used to sell our cloth diapers on eBay, but then eBay decided cloth diapers are unpleasant, so we were left with very little options.

Now, thanks to the rad people at Everything Birth, we have the perfect solution.  I’ve also got to add, it feels comforting to me knowing that this new classifieds listing forum is was created by a company that has continually and pleasantly  shocked me with their high standard of business ethics, non-judgmental outlook on parenting, dedication to children and midwifery, and responsible lifestyles.

Baby Carriers for Shopping

Baby Carriers for Shopping

While braving the malls during the Christmas shopping season, I was armed with a baby carrier. I got many comments, such as, “Gosh, doesn’t that hurt your back?”  They must be thinking that all baby carriers are created equal, because my baby carrier was designed just for my back and my baby’s hips and spine. The baby carrier I was adorning (that caught so much attention while out shopping) was a Mei Tai style carrier and it was heavenly.

Not only did I not have to push around a stroller, which from what I can tell are designed solely to suit the ergonomic needs of a person 5’7.321 inches tall, but I also did not have to carry my baby in a detachable car seat that pretends to also be an infant carrier.  Now, these things are a total joke.  So, for added convenience, you can simply unsnap the car seat from the base, and… voila! You have an instant carrier that weighs a gabillion© pounds, will bang against your leg with every step, will increase your chiropractic bill by 300%, and will keep you adequately detached from your baby.

You can use a wonderful baby carrier that takes less than a minute to tie on, and will provide you will the comfort of knowing people can’t touch your baby with their germy-money-and-flu-season-mouth touching-fingers without you knowing about it. It will also help you from getting stressed out at the mall because it’s really quite hard to stress when your gorgeous little baby is resting soundly and breathing deeply against your chest, with their little butts encompassed by the padded carrier situated perfectly for your hands to pat at will. As a bonus feature, with a well made baby carrier, you’re hands free. That means you will have… count ‘em… TWO hands to carry bags, go through your purse, browse through racks and bins of merchandise, resituate your pants, blow your nose, wash your hands (in that order please) or do whatever else your two hands desire.

…and the entire time…

Your back will thank you.

While We Wait For Hyland’s Teething Tablets To Come Back…

We all love Hyland’s Teething Tablets. We are all bummed about the dumb recall on Hyland’s Teething Tablets. While we wait for them to come back, we do have more options though besides just soothing our kids with organic teething toys. Let’s face it, most of us that frequent Everything Birth’s blog aren’t about to use something like Baby Orajel.

Hyland’s isn’t the only kind of homeopathic teething remedy. There are a few others on the market. They work the same way that Hyland’s Teething Tablets do. They are all 100% safe. They all have basically the same ingredients. They all work on the same basic homeopathic principals as Hyland’s Teething Tablets did, they are just less marketed, and so the FDA didn’t feel like bullying their manufacturers around.

If you are interested in a substitute for Hyland’s Teething Tablets during this recall, we have compiled the other brands into our Homeopathic Combination Remedies page of our Amazon store for your convenience. We don’t offer them on our actual web store, because we are patiently awaiting the return of Hyland’s Teething Tablets. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to bring on a new product for the short interim while we wait. Here’s what homeopathic teething remedies we offer in association with Amazon:

So, you don’t have to give up on homeopathy for teething while we wait for Hyland’s Teething Tablets to get back on the market from the dumb recall. These products will work just as well as Hyland’s Teething Tablets did for your babies.

Bed Wetter Pants

Bed Wetter Pants

I just stumbled upon this product: Mother Ease Bedwetter Pants. These cloth pull-ups are definitely going in my shopping cart. I’ve mentioned it before, but my (full-time) step-son struggles with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. One of the big challenges with FASD is nighttime wetting. I know that it’s a common enough problem for even healthy brained children, but in our case, his bedwetting problem is caused by his disability.

I spent a short time putting him in disposable pull-ups, unsure of how to handle the bedwetting.  At four, he couldn’t snap his Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers, so that meant if he did actually remember to go to the bathroom, he’d be frustrated and dependent on us to help him. He would have zero independence if we had gone that route. We tried him in cloth trainers, but they were never absorbent enough. Besides, he wasn’t training. He has a disability. If he was going to have an accident at night, he was going to completely empty his bladder, and he wasn’t going to notice (because his brain doesn’t talk to his body like it normally would.) That’s why we had him in disposables for a short time. Not long ago, he learned how to snap his Fuzzi Bunz. Given that, we stopped with the disposable pull-ups and switched him back to the Fuzzi Bunz.

In the back of my mind though, I’ve wondered what we would do in a year or so when he would be unable to fit in the Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers any longer. I was shocked that at five, he still could. Mother Ease is a wonderful manufacturer, so I know that I can order these cloth incontinence pants with confidence. They absorb twenty one ounces of fluid!

These will make my step-son feel so good about himself that I might even use a couple of these as Christmas presents. Plus, he’ll like that they’re called “pants” and not “diapers.”

Fuzzi Bunz donates diapers to Eagle Scout Project

The maker of Fuzzi Bunz, recently donated 500 Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers to help out a young man who had traveled to Uganda while working on his Eagle Scout Project.

Boy Scouts generally pick one very large community service project that is a part of earning the very dignified status of Eagle Scout. Achieving the ranking of an Eagle Scout is the most prestigious recognition available to a Boy Scout. It signifies the pinnacle of their scouting career. Generally scouts choose a project closer to home, but this scout chose to travel to Uganda, where apparently, since this trip, his heart still remains. He vowed to go back to help these people again one day.

This certainly isn’t the first time the maker of Fuzzi Bunz has donated diapers to impoverished communities, and I’m sure it won’t be the last. Mother of Eden’s owner Tereson Dupuy is intensely into philanthropy and is regularly found giving to those in need of her help. This young scout apparently was able to appeal to the open hearts of those at Fuzzi Bunz. His story is amazing and deserves recognition. Check out this young man:

In other exciting diapering news, Fuzzi Bunz was just honored with two Stevie Awards for Women in Business.

  • The FuzziBunz One-Size Cloth Diaper, the most adjustable one-size cloth diaper, was named “Best New Product of the Year”
  • FuzziBunz was named “Most Innovative Company of the Year” for its efforts to bring quality eco-friendly diapering products to moms around the world.

While Everything Birth was already very proud to carry Fuzzi Bunz in their product line, these two stories, make them even more proud to support this wonderful company.

The Biggest Organic Fiber Concern

The Biggest Organic Fiber Concern

We know that organic clothing is important for little ones. It helps keep their skin less irritated. We strive for all organic sheets in their beds and cribs. We love purchasing organic diapers for their little tushes.

A huge key element continuously gets overlooked though. Unfortunately, it’s probably the most crucial element to rearing a baby in a less toxic environment:

Their bedding.

I’m not just talking about their sheets and blankets. It’s crucial that their actual beds be free of toxic chemicals.  These days, normal children’s bedding is required to be flame retardant. So they spray a flame retardant into the fabric of mattresses, pads, and pillows. Then our children breathe this in for the majority of their day.  Also, most of today’s mattresses have a super comfortable foam on top of it. It IS very comfortable, however, it’s made entirely of chemicals. If you’ve ever bought a new bed, you can smell these chemicals as they release their nasty gas for the first few weeks of being opened. And our babies breathe this in for the majority of their day.

Then, if we choose not to co-sleep, we put a bumper all around the bed. This does a couple of things. It keeps our babies from shoving their leg out of the crib’s railing AND it traps the gasses even more in a little pool of icky air and we then proceed to lay our babies down to sleep in this pool of chemically made gas.

If you head on over to our Amazon store, you will find plenty of safer options. Don’t worry about not having flame retardant in the bedding, wool is naturally flame retardant.
